Every day for a year, I'm documenting details encountered in daily life in the hope that it will help me focus on small things and make something beautiful. Join me!
These are hanging in the window of Cool Jewels in Montpelier. I've often passed them and thought I should take a picture. I finally did. I love the colors, and the slight blurriness of this picture gives it an air of dreaminess. I like that.
See? I told you. Cold and snowy. This is in the parking lot at school. I find I take many pictures here. Could be that it's a particularly interesting parking lot. Could be that arriving and departing school is when I have time to notice the details.
It is very cold and snowy here. Still. I was outside trying to get a picture of the snow -- it was perfectly covering all of the branches of the trees outside our door. It was too dark to get a good one of the trees, so I turned my attention to the light. Always a good idea.
This was the pattern of drips that were on the sidewalk underneath a tree. I walked by it initially, but I actually noticed it a few steps after I saw it. You know how that happens? You see something but it doesn't register, and then you take a few more steps and you realize what you saw. It's been happening to me a lot since I started doing this project. I'm glad I went back for the photo. I like it.
It was an absolutely gorgeous day, and we went to a friend's birthday party at a camp site on Kettle Pond. It's an awesome spot, and amazing that it's only about 40 minutes from our house. The whole thing was still frozen, and we walked out onto the ice. Couldn't have been a more beautiful day.
Another day when I almost missed taking a photo. But I remembered just before the lights went out. This is my partner's shoulder. I liked the way the light was hitting it. I also liked that it was right there and I didn't have to go tromping through the house looking for a detail to photograph. I probably shouldn't admit that, but it's true. A year-long project is bound to have its moments of imperfection. Just keepin' it real.
A piece of yarn that was (and probably still is) on my desk. I try really hard to stay organized and neat at work, but neither of those things are my forte. And my office is home to not only my office, but all of the supplies and equipment that we need (or have) for the before and after school programs. And children are in and out of it often. Therefore "neat" and "organized" are not words one would generally use to describe my office. Which is why this piece of yarn was on my desk (and probably still is).
I came across this impermanent sculpture when I was walking home from town. The funny thing was that I had done the same thing in the snow earlier that day in a completely different location, a 45-minute drive away from this one. I was on the phone and there was a snow bank, so I stuck my foot in it a bunch of times and made a line. I'm pretty sure this one wasn't copy-catting, just a funny coincidence.
It's now officially mud season in VT Doesn't mean we won't still get some snow, but we've moved into the thaw. The melting snow means that the roads are muddy and so is my kitchen floor. This one is taken in the parking lot at school. I love how the tracks go so many different ways. There must be a metaphor in there somewhere....
This is our cat, Mouse. When you scratch his belly, he sticks his arms up over his head. I think it's hilarious. He looks like he's doing a victory fist pump, giving the #1. I often cheer for him when he does it. He's remarkably difficult to photograph, so I consider this photo a triumph. Picture me doing a #1 stretch after I finish typing this entry. Oh yeah.
This is the slightly embarrassed winner of a bake-off, which was part of a fundraiser that I organized. I only baked because I was afraid we wouldn't have enough entries. But then my cake won the gluten free category. It had 2 sticks of butter, 5 eggs, and 1 1/2 cups of chocolate. It was damn good.
I took this while walking to town on a snowy day. This is a spot where you can see out over Montpelier and there are about 4 different steeples jutting up over the roofline, as well as the Capitol's dome. A beautiful view, but hard to capture on film. It's the depth that makes it so cool, and you lose that in a photo...at least with my camera. So I opted for a detail instead. This is on the roof of Union Elementary School.
I forgot. It's the first time. Hopefully...the last? I took this picture on 3.10.11. I got all stuck in my head trying to make up an appropriate penance for myself, but then I realized that it wasn't a big deal! And it didn't mean the project was going to end. I simply just forgot. And I shall move forward. No penance necessary.
This is a close-up of the dress I bought today for my wedding! It's linen and kind of a sun dress. Knee length. And I got bright orange 4" heels to go with it. The dress is very me, the shoes are not so much...but I love them. And you gotta push your comfort zone every once in a while - a wedding is a good time to do so.
How can I not take thousands of pictures of the snow? There's so much of it around here. We got 30" on Monday. It was a good last snow of the season. (Right. Right...?)
A wind-up toy that lives on a sconce in our kitchen. Why? Because we like it. He looks like he's quite happy in this picture. I guess he likes living in our kitchen.
This is the view out of my office window. I love the shadows these trees make and I look at them often. It's also a great view of the playground, and it's fun to watch the kids at recess sledding down this hill.
This is one of those details that I've been saving for a late night when I haven't yet taken my picture and I'm on my way to bed. So that's my picture of the day. And good night.
I have a sore throat and find myself drinking lots of tea. I especially like drinking it out of this enormous mug, hand made by my talented potter of a mom. Thanks Mom!
